Meeting Martha Stewart

During the Dreamers into Doers conference in New York, I was impressed and grateful for the opportunity to tour Martha Stewart’s enormous offices, test kitchens, and attend a live taping of the show. The short seminars were informative and entertaining. But the part that I was looking forward to the most was the talk on starting a foundation. I scored a seat up front and hoped for the guts to stand up and ask my question. Sitting with Ms. Stewart was Susan Solomon, founder of New Yorkers for the Advancement of Medical Research, the New York Council for the Joslin Diabetes Center and The New York Stem Cell Foundation. I raised my hand and had a microphone thrusted into my hands. No turning back.

“I want to start a foundation that would cover the cost of transporting people with special needs.”

Mrs. Solomon gave me so much useful advice but the ultimate moment came when Martha Stewart said she had started a program at Mt. Sinai in New York called Martha Stewart Center for Living, a geriatric outpatient clinic dedicated to her beloved mother. I wonder how many people know of this? I told her the much needed service that I provided was not covered by insurance and most elderly people, or people with disabilites were not able to pay out of pocket. She stated that an initiative should be started to have this service paid. My new project, not a foundation, but a voter initiative.

Starting a business is not for the faint hearted

My business celebrated it's first birthday on Dec. 14, 2010. I was filled with excitement of what was to come. Wow, what a ride of unexpected occurrences, some great, others not so much.
I am still teaching in an elementary school. But, after 33 years, I wanted a new experience. It was a risk, I can't negate that. Just ask my family, they have all told me what a bad idea this is and that it will not work period.
In the beginning my husband and I were going to start the business together. He later changed his mind. I went it alone. I remember sitting on the patio with my daughter, trying to come up with just the right name. Comfort Coach Transport was born. I research and read everything I could get my hands on. Here I was at the young age of 55 going into the unknown alone. I had to continue to teach to support the business. Not a problem because we were very short of customers. How the heck do you get customers? That wasn't the only road block. I found out that dealing with the state and Medical is a nightmare. I had to learn to jump through many hoops! But eventually I was able to get everything but Medical. After one year of trying, I was informed we were to small and didn't have enough capital. Kinda funny in a way since they haven't paid their providers for 6 months. More fun stuff to come on next blog. Please stay tuned.

Were you aware that San Diego's senior population is the fastest growing demographic, rising by a whopping 81% since 1990.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration

36 million people over the age of 65 were licenced drivers in the US.

6,000 people over 65 were killed in auto accidents. You may think most of this happened at night, but

81% of these happened during the day when it is much easier to see.

We must also be mindful of medication. 58% of drivers over the age of 50 use one or more medications that can potentially cause impairment while driving. So even though it is Senior Driver Awareness week. All driver must be mindful if taking medications. Check with your Doctor. If you are involved in an accident while taking medications, you could be sited for negligence. Oh yes, it is good to have knowledge!

Getting you loved one to a doctor is of utmost importance. Many changes occur as one ages. Some of these can have a direct impact on driving ability.

Hearing problems
vision problems
Slower reaction time
Depth perception changes
Loss of flexibility
Nervousness of anxiety
Medication that can impair driving ability

To asses risk factors, seniors should have a complete medical screening by their family doctor. You can also access a driver safety screening at AARP.org/driversafetycourse.

The difficult subject has now been brought to the open. Where should you go from here? There are many resources available to help during this transition.

The first is the family doctor. Speak honestly about your concerns and have your senior get a complete medical screening that includes hearing and vision.

AAA offers driver assessment tools for folks over 65 years of age. The AAA foundation has partnered up with Posit Science to produce an online program that has been clinically proven to help drivers see more, react faster, and amazingly cut car accidents by 50%. Visit http://www.driversharpernow.com/. It is important to note that one is able to train the brain to drive safer and longer.

AAA and transport safety researchers also offer a state of the art on line assessment tool that measures functional abilities scientifically linked to automobile accidents. Check out the Roadwise review on the AAA website.

The day will come if it hasn't already when we must sit with our seniors and discuss driving concerns. This is not easy. The older adult may react strongly because of feels of incompetence and loss of independence. Ideally these discussions should be had and a plan set in place. But, if like me, you have not talked about this situation, do not despair, there are resources available. Please follow me over the next few weeks as we explore this delicate subject.

Seniors that know when it's time to stop driving is rare. It's a fact of life. We grow older and experience changes in Physical, mental, and sensory abilities that may lead to one's ability to drive safely. Adult children have a challenge at hand to convince elder parents to give up the keys. After all, if we know our parents are not safe drivers, is it now our responsibility and burden to intervene. This is not for the faint heart, for it can be heartbreaking. So the question is how to accomplish this with great delicacy. Dec. 6-10 is Older Driver Safety Awareness Week. Baby Boomers a Powerful tide

It's great to be part of the Boomer Generation. On January 1, 2006, the first baby boomers turned 60. The boomers are the generation born between 1946-1964. This fantastic group has seen 12 presidents, one of which was assassinated, a man walk on the moon, the struggle with civil rights and even protested the Vietnam war. We have witnessed an advancement in technology from black and white TV, to computers, cell phones and space travel now available for a price. Our generation saw the birth of Rock and Roll and dance away under a shiny globe in the disco. Boomers were flower children, hippies, freaks and geeks as well as draft dodgers and conscientious objectors. Woodstock will forever be remembered! And now...this is the largest population. We are health conscious, often have more money to spend and time to spend it. This is a force to be reckoned. We are boomers, hear us roar!!
